Skip Hire sizes
Our skips are available for hire in different sizes. Home removal or office, we have whatever skip size you’ll need. We have skip sizes as small as 2 yards for small DIY projects and as big as 12 yards for industrial projects. Our skip sizes are 2 yard, 4 yard, 6 yard, 8 yard, 10 yard, and 12 yard.
- 4 Yard Skip Hire You can find a 4 yard skip for hire as well at Norris Sheffield. The 4 yard skip is two times bigger in holding space than the 2 yard skip, and is 0.90meters long. Its width of 1.5m by 2.5m allows space for larger products, such as kitchen and bathroom refits, appliances, electronics, and furniture. 45 to 50 black waste bags, and a little over 17 full barrow loads of waste, can fit into it. An excellent use for it would be DIY projects and garden clearance.
- 6 Yard Skip Hire The 6 yard skip is perfect for home extension projects and office premises renovations. At Norris Sheffield, we provide the 6 yard skip to carry any builders waste. It is an ideal storage option for materials and waste like stones and soil. It has enough space for 75 to 95 black bin bags, or 30 full barrow loads of builders waste due to its width of 1.8m by 2.3m. This skip is probably the most used around your area.
- 8 Yard Skip Hire We have the 8 yard skip available, which is perfect for bigger building projects. It’s not that different from the 6 yard skip, but it has a larger holding capacity. The 8 yard skip is 1.9m by 3.4m wide, but surpasses the 6 yard skip in holding space by almost 20%. 100-115 black disposable bags can fit well into the 8 yard skip, as can 40 barrow loads of soil, concrete, and other builders waste. If you’re doing a massive home removal, the 8 yard skip would be a perfect choice.
- 10 Yard Skip Hire If you’re looking for a much bigger skip for a large garden clearance or home removal, then you should check out the 10 yard skip. Norris Sheffield has the 2.1m by 3.6m wide 10 yard skip available for hire for commercial projects. It has a large holding capacity and can contain about 120–140 large disposal bags or 52 full barrow loads of commercial waste at once. It’s ideal for larger building projects, site clearance, or home removals.
- 12 Yard Skip Hire This skip is mainly for industrialized purposes. If you need a skip large enough to be used for large scale waste disposal during site or office clearance or commercial projects, the 12 skip yard we have for hire at Norris Sheffield is be perfect. With a width of 2.5m by 4.0m, this skip is also long enough to contain 150–185 black disposable bags at any time. All waste management agencies now have some recycling targets to meet, which are set by the Environmental Agency and the government. We acknowledge these targets which include: The English and Welsh environment is protected and improved upon by the Environmental Agency. Several other local authorities and organisations work with the Environmental Agency to achieve its aims, and to provide other environmental services to areas in need of it. The Environmental Agency also strives to improve the quality of water, land, and air continuously. The agency strives to control environmental pollution and promote the conservation of animals, land, and natural resources. That’s not all! They also educate people on issues that are related to the environment, promote household product recycling to reduce its quantity, better waste disposal standards, and so on. Get in touch with the Environmental Agency office in your location, or you can find the head office in Bristol Rio House, Waterside Drive, Almondsbury BS32 4UD. Telephone: 08708 506 506. As for Government Targets, a landfill directive was released. It reflects the goals of reducing the quantity of waste sent to landfill spots in the country. Taking effect from the most recent year, the targets include: That the amount of waste taken to landfill spots in the UK by 2015 be only 35% of the amount taken in 1995. By 2013, the waste taken to landfill sites around the United Kingdom should be 50% of what was taken in 1995. That waste quantity taken to landfill sites be 75% of the amount taken in 1995 by 2010. Furthermore, the following targets were introduced by the Waste Strategy 2000, for waste recovery and to make the landfill directive achievable: As at 2015, 67% of waste should be recovered, 45% of waste should be recovered as of 2010, while 40% of waste should be recovered as of 2005. The government published the natural recycling targets by the Waste Strategy 2000. These targets include: 33% of household waste should be composted or recycled by 2015. The target projects that, as of 2010, 30% of household waste should either be recycled or composted. The target projects that, as of 2005, 25% of household waste should either be recycled or composted, and every single local authority was to be 30% in the same year. The government, in its quest to reduce waste, for landfill diversion, and to assist local authorities in more recycling, has issued a “Waste Performance and Efficiency Grant”. Here is a list of recyclable materials: computers, printer cartridges, glass, oil, electrical and electronics, furniture, batteries, paper, vehicles, clinical waste, metal, and a variety of others. To keep yourself updated on any of the latest additions to the targets, especially for the upcoming years, you can visit the Norris Sheffield office at Sheffield.

Other Skip Hire Pricing Factors
Some factors are important to look into when hiring a skip. At Norris Sheffield, we understand these factors and will briefly explain them to you. Regional Pricing – the cost of hiring a skip differs from region to region. A skip priced at £50 in London, for example, may be priced at £20 in Sheffield. The longer you need to hold on to a skip, the more expensive the skip will be, because pricing is affected by time as well. Taking into consideration that skip hire permits have a time duration. Limitations and Restrictions – you can’t always put a huge amount of weight in a skip just because it looks big. Ask your skip hire service provider if they have restrictions on their skips. Some items are prohibited from being put in the skips, find out what they are, and obey the restrictions so you don’t get a fine or sanction.
Issues with renting skips in Sheffield
At Norris Sheffield, we are aware of all the challenges that come with hiring the best skips, especially if you have to get a skip hire permit as well. Renting a skip in Sheffield may come with issues such as local council laws, pedestrian only lanes, narrow paths, red routes, small parking space, congestion zones, small gardens, and double yellow lines. We know that the growing population in Sheffield will mean a more difficult skip hiring process soon. However, you can make use of our rubbish removal services, instead of worrying about renting a skip and hustling for a skip hire permit.
Skip Hire Rules and regulations
The regulation of waste deposits, and the recovery and removal of “controlled waste” is handled by the waste licensing system that was put in place in 1994, replacing the 1974 Control of Pollution Act. Liquid or solid waste from industrial, commercial, and household processes are called controlled wastes. If you only do personal garden waste removal, however, you do not require the license. In order to have the license, the person applying has to show that they are fit to hold it. Applications for new site ownership need to be accompanied by the Waste Management Training and Advisory Board (WAMITAB) certificate as proof of “technical competence”.
In section 34 of the act, the duty of care for all those who make, bring in, move, treat, store or remove controlled waste is available. The following was stated in the Act: “any escape or waste must be avoided, waste can only be moved to an authorized person, the waste being transferred should go with a written description or you will be penalized.” There are also the special waste regulations 1996 and the hazardous waste regulations 2005, that regulates how waste should be disposed of.
Skip Hire Permits
To place a skip for a construction project on any public land, you need a skip hire permit. Skip hire permits have to be obtained when you need to use land that isn’t your property to place your skip. The land in question may be that of a third party, a street, a government road, or a federal highway. You can use your own land or space without a skip hire permit if you have it, only ensuring you don’t cross into land that isn’t yours. If you happen to cross into someone else’s land who isn’t a part of your project, or invade another person’s privacy with the skip, it could be seized or you could be fined. You can get a skip hire permit for £20, although the skip size and issuing council would also affect the cost. Some skip hire permits cost higher than £20, possibly £60, £80, and up to £100. The local council office can provide you with the specifics you need on pricing. However, it’s our duty at Norris Sheffield to make your skip hire a smooth process. So why go through the stress of getting a skip hire permit when we can get it for you, while we deliver the skip you require? We include the cost of getting ski hire permits in our online quotes when you request them, which can be removed if you already have land or a place on which to put the skip. The permits we have available alongside our skip hire services can serve for up to 14 days. You can reach us now on 020 8698 8000 if you need to know more details on skip hire permits and other waste disposal services.

Therefore, if you need a closed or open skip, you can rely on us to make it available to you with proof of efficiency and quality. At Norris Sheffield, we allow a large variety of waste to be put in our skips. There are products, however, that are prohibited from being put in our skips. We can get these products from you and have them treated depending on how hazardous they are. Medical waste, gas canisters, air conditioning units, heavy duty batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, television sets, refrigerators, and aerosols are prohibited from being in our skips.
Recycling Targets/Landfill Policy
There are recycling targets put in place by the Environmental Agency and government. We at Norris Sheffield acknowledge these targets and here they are: The Environmental Agency aims to make sure the Englands’ and Wales’ environment can improve and is protected. Some government organisations and local authorities are tasked with the job of meeting their targets and making sure other environmental services available get to needed locations. The Environmental Agency also strives to improve the quality of water, land, and air continuously. They have efforts in place for environmental pollution control and to encourage the conservation of nature. That isn’t even all! The body provides public education on environmental matters as well, supporting the recycling of household waste to reduce the quantity. The Environmental Agency can be contacted on 08708 506 506 or through their office in your locality, or their head office at Rio House, Waterside Drive, Almondsbury BS32 4UD. A landfill directive was released to address Government Targets. It gives a recommended target on how much the amount of waste needs to be reduced for landfilling spots in the United Kingdom. It added as well that landfills from 2007 should only take waste that has been treated. The targets are as follows from the most recent year: No more that 35% of the waste retrieved to use for landfill sites in the UK should be retrieved by 2015. Only 50% of the waste taken in 1995 should be taken for landfill sites in the UK in 2013. No more that 75% of the waste retrieved to use for landfill sites in the UK should be retrieved by 2010 Also added by the Waste Strategy 2000 were the following targets, to ensure 75% waste recovery and the achievement of the landfill directive, the following waste percentages have to be recovered: 67% in 2015, 45% in 2010 and 40% in 2005.
The government published, in the Waste Strategy 2000, the following natural recycling targets:
33% of household waste must be composted or recycled as of 2015. Household waste that is composted or recycled in 2010 should be at 30%. Household waste that is composted or recycled, in 2015, should be 25%, while the local authorities had a 30% target. A ” Waste Performance and Efficiency Grant” was set up by the government to move the efforts of the local authorities towards more recycling and reduction of waste, and for landfill diversion. Wood, vehicles, composting, clinical waste, building materials, batteries, paper, printer cartridges, plastic, furniture, glass, oil, metal, electricals and electronics, computers, and more are recyclable.
